How can I keep my film or video safe?

Updated: Feb 9, 2023

Once you have invested in having a film or video made for your business, school or charity. It is important to know that your content is kept safe. The cards which cameras film onto can become corrupted and the costs or disruption to the business to have to go back and re film parts is a production companies worst nightmare.

Sadly it does happen.

  • Make multiple copies of your original footage – 3 copies is considered standard. Try to keep one of those copies offsite, in case there is a fire or flood, you would not want the disaster to affect all 3 copies at once.

  • Once you have your film and you are going to upload it, we do suggest that you look into where you are planning on hosting the video. There are lots of free websites designed to be able to download videos from YouTube, if that is something that you want to mitigate as much as possible you can upload to Vimeo. That way there is not only options to password protect your content, you may also change who can host the video and you can even make it so it is not downloadable at all.

  • Which leads us to the last point, a great way to keep your content safe would be to watermark your film or video- embedding a logo in a corner. It makes it very difficult to crop out and remove.

That is not to say that it is 100% safe, because if someone really wanted to – if they have the password then they could screen record your content. But it is not an easy thing to do, and they still require the link and password and during the screen recording process some of the quality will be lost. And if you watermarked the film with your logo it’s even harder as they would have to try to remove your logo.

Over the last 8 years we have developed these processes to keep your investment safe, and we do our upmost to keep all of our clients work safe and confidential.

One of our processes to keep your content as safe as possible, during the review process we will use a program to share your files with you; you can review on your phone or on a browser without downloading any software. Your content can be password protected and the only people with the link can access the film. Once you are happy with your film we will send you a specific link to download your files, through the same portal.

Even after your project is completed we will archive your project for 12 months. That way if you have any major changes that occur within that time, staff changes etc then we may just have to only re shoot 1 or 2 key parts rather than re filming the whole thing, costing you only a fraction of a whole film.
